Signs of a hidden water leak

  • A water bill that jumps without a change in use
  • The water meter moves when every fixture is off
  • Damp or stained drywall, warped flooring or musty smells
  • Warm spots on a floor, a possible hot water slab leak
  • The sound of running water when nothing is on

Quick test: turn off every fixture, note the meter reading, wait an hour without using water, and check again. If it moved, you have a leak somewhere on your side of the meter.

Slab leak repair

A slab leak is a leak in a pipe under the concrete floor. Options include spot repair through the slab, rerouting the line through walls or the ceiling, or repiping the affected run. The contractor will explain which approach suits the pipe material and the leak location.

Pipe repair and replacement

Pinhole leaks in copper, corroded galvanized fittings and cracked drain pipe can usually be repaired by replacing the damaged section. If leaks keep appearing in different places along the same material, replacing the whole run is often more economical than repeated repairs.

Repiping older and historic homes

Many older Indianapolis homes, including houses in historic districts such as Irvington, Old Northside and Fletcher Place, still have galvanized steel supply lines, and some have lead service lines. If you have frequent leaks, rust colored water or low pressure throughout the house, ask about repiping. In older homes, a careful contractor will plan routes that limit openings in plaster walls and original trim. Your water utility can tell you whether your service line is on record as lead.

Gas line repair and installation

If you smell gas, leave the building immediately and call your gas utility's emergency line or 911 from outside. Once the utility has made it safe, we can connect you with a licensed contractor for gas line repair, or for gas line installation to a new range, dryer, water heater or outdoor grill.

How do plumbers find hidden leaks?

They use acoustic listening equipment, thermal imaging, moisture meters and pressure tests to narrow down where a leak is before opening walls or floors. This keeps repair holes small and avoids guesswork.

Does homeowners insurance cover leak detection?

Coverage varies by policy, and many cover sudden water damage but not the cost of finding or fixing a slowly worn out pipe. Take photos of any damage and call your insurer before major repairs begin.
