Common garbage disposal problems
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Hums but doesn't spin | Jammed flywheel, with something stuck between the impellers |
| Completely silent | Tripped reset button, breaker or a failed switch |
| Leaking from the bottom | Internal seal failure, which usually means replacement |
| Leaking at the top or side | Loose mounting ring or drain connection, often repairable |
| Sink drains slowly | Clog in the disposal or the drain line beyond it |

Repair or replace?
A jam, a tripped reset or a loose connection is usually a quick repair. A disposal that leaks from the body, smells of burning or is more than about ten years old is normally cheaper to replace than to fix.

Garbage disposal installation
A new disposal needs a sink flange, a mounting assembly, a drain connection at the right height for the trap, a dishwasher connection if you have one, and power from a switched outlet or hardwired circuit. If your kitchen has never had a disposal, the contractor will check whether an outlet and switch need adding. Ask about horsepower: a larger motor handles tougher scraps and jams less often.
Keeping a disposal running well
- Run cold water before, during and for a few seconds after use
- Keep grease, bones, fruit pits and stringy vegetable scraps out
- Don't use it for large amounts of rice, pasta or coffee grounds
Other kitchen and bathroom fixture problems, such as dripping faucets or a running toilet, are covered on toilet, faucet and sink repair.

Why is my garbage disposal humming but not working?
A hum means the motor has power but the flywheel is jammed, usually by a bone, pit or utensil. With the power off, many units can be freed with a hex key in the bottom of the disposal, and if it stays jammed, call a plumber.
How long does a garbage disposal last?
Most disposals last around 8 to 15 years depending on the model and how it's used. Running cold water during and after use, and keeping grease and stringy scraps out, extends its life.
